Wed. Sept 8 2010

we started the morning watching an old movie, Crossroads, where a young talented man befriends an old blues player that sold his soul to the devil to be a great bluesman. they go on a journey together in hopes of finding a lost song... good movie and the boys enjoyed it.
Then they wrote in their journals about what they had accomplished yesterday.
We took a side trip to the dollar store to get some new workbooks to use for this years subjects.
Today was language arts, and we started lesson 1 from the Simply grammar curriculum by Charlotte Mason. A very easy way to teach grammar fundamentals. Part one is the 2 parts of what makes a sentence a sentence, the subject and what is said about the subject.
We had lunch, which they helped make, and they quietly read for a while from their novels for their upcoming book report.

They wrote down their new words for this week, beginning week one of the Basic Cozy on-line spelling curriculum. They also read the spelling rules from the website, http://www.splashesfromtheriver.com/spelling/index.htm

The core subject for today is Science, in which they quizzed each other from the book **Beaver Ed's Quiz, Category:Animals. The book is based on the TV quiz show, *Who wants to be a millionaire*

Then break time: Lunch
We went to the library and picked out some movies and novels to study
For Brad, Tuck Everlasting and Halo Contact Harvest(we'll see how this one goes as
it is an adult sci-fi book and may be over his head)
For Cam, I am Jack and Melonhead and the big stink.
After that we went to pick up some groceries and they were a huge help, so ice-cream sundaes!!!
Shepherds pie for dinner, chores then bed.
Camping the Labour day away! We headed up north to our camper for the last summer weekend. I hardly saw the boys as they were off playing with their friends and running around! Cameron and one of his friends, mikayla, decided to make a craft, creating birch-bark dolls. They were so cool looking and they went around the park holding a kind of silent auction to raise some money for the park-fund and kids day fund.
On Sunday there was the annual horseshoe tournament,Pig-roast and pot luck dinner....yummmmmmmm.

We headed back home on Monday, so Bob could get ready to start the midnight shift at his new work. We will be getting sorted for school-work
...woo hooThat's all for now

Friday, September 3, 2010

Ok so our first week didn't go as planned. Since I have a daycare child coming every morning at 6:15 am, the boys want to play more than do any learning. Brad di help me make biscuits and learned how to knead dough and multiply fractions because we doubled the recipe. Next week the daycare boy goes back to school, so we can really focus on the learning... I have higher expectations of the boys this year and we will be focusing on the main core subjects.
We will be heading to the camper this weekend to close things down. I am pretty upset that we didn't get a chance to spend more time there over the summer. Dad will be starting midnight shift at his new job, so there will definitely be some juggling of our schedule over the next few weeks.
Well that in a nutshell is what happened this week.

Our Journal of Home Learning

Aug 30 2010

I am creating a blog for us to keep a journal of the 2010 school year for Brad and Cam.
Hopefully we will see the great progress they will make this year in learning and education!

As of today we are starting a review of past things that were taught. The length will be determined by how much they have retained over the course of the summer months. We will post all the educational things that we did over the summer here in a little bit, cause we did a lot!!!

This morning, Brad and Cam started their planners and we will be using these every morning to jot down goals and achievements. Also, because it is Monday and we do math on Mondays, they did a little math review. Brad multiplication and long division, Cam adding in the thousands and written problem solving.
Since I also run daycare, the boys were allowed to have free time, to build lego with their friend.
After lunch we will probably go outside to get some exercise.
That will be all for today as I set up this blog...
